Albrecht Dürer

The large horse

Details

Bartsch 97; Meder 94 d-e (from f); Schoch/Mende/Scherbaum 43 d-e (from f).

Description

Fine, harmonious, slightly later print with the vertical scratches on the horse’s neck and hocks. The two short scratches in the air at the top left are still visible. Cut close to the edge of the plate. Dürer’s “Large Horse” is a view of the “Little Horse”, created in the same year, in profile. In this depiction, the artist shows a stoically calm, northern Alpine workhorse, which was the typical warhorse of the time and could easily carry an armed man on its back. – Slightly yellowed, some tiny foxmarks on the reverse. Traces and remnants of a former mount on the reverse, otherwise in good condition.
