Senior Director Acquisitions with focus on Post War and Contemporary Art (m/f/d)

Karl & Faber Kunstauktionen is one of the most renowned auction houses in Germany. Based in the heart of Munich, the house operates on the international art market and combines tradition and the present: for 100 years now, works of art from the fields of Old Masters, 19th century art, modern and contemporary art have been coming under the hammer with estimated prices of between 800 and 1,000,000 euros. Karl & Faber works together with a worldwide network of renowned art experts in museums, research institutions and foundations, which supports the in-house provenance research with independent expert opinions. A team of 30 expert employees at the head office in Munich and the branch office in Hamburg as well as representatives in the Rhineland, Tegernsee, Switzerland, Austria, England, France and the USA maintain personal contact with clients from all over the world.

 

To support the contemporary art department, we are looking for a

Senior Director Acquisitions with a focus on Post War and Contemporary Art (m/f/d) full-time.

The position is initially limited to two years.

 

Areas of responsibility

  • Acquisition of consignments with a focus on post war and contemporary art
  • Highly proactive in leading sales discussions, working closely with the department and management where appropriate
  • Creating an understanding of what is in the collections of existing clients
  • Responding thoroughly and promptly to inquiries with estimates tailored to clients’ specific needs and requirements
  • Finding new buyers and building relationships with third parties (lawyers, notaries, financial advisors, etc.)
  • Actively promoting our contemporary art auctions and private sales by proactively approaching (potential) buyers and by constantly highlighting opportunities for clients in our auctions
  • Building a portfolio of existing clients, but also actively seeking out new collectors and potential buyers, while always providing excellent customer service
  • Enhance/raise your profile by attending gallery openings and art related events and acting as an ambassador for the Karl & Faber brand

Requirements

  • Preferably extensive knowledge, passion and commitment to the art market with in-depth experience of art auction processes
  • Proven business acumen
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a commitment to an exemplary customer service
  • University degree or equivalent (preferably an art-related Master’s degree)
  • Ability to work effectively, both individually and as part of a team and to step in when needed
  • Ability to work under pressure and have a flexible approach to a wide range of tasks.
  • Willingness to learn from others and good organizational skills with demonstrated ability to meet deadlines
  • Confident in the use of common Office programs (Apple/Mac knowledge an advantage)
  • Willingness to travel and flexibility in working hours
  • Class 3 driver’s license

Internship at Karl & Faber | Munich

Karl & Faber Fine Art Auctions is one of the most renowned auction houses in Germany. Based in the heart of Munich, the house operates on the international art market and combines tradition and the present: since 1923, works of art from the fields of Old Masters, 19th century art, modern and contemporary art have come under the hammer. Karl & Faber works with a worldwide network of renowned art experts in museums, research institutions and foundations.

Every year we are looking for two interns (m/f/d) for 3 months in the periods end of February/end of May and beginning of September/end of November.

We offer interesting and varied tasks in the context of an internship around our spring and autumn auctions. In addition to enthusiasm for working with art, foreign language skills and a current degree in art history or similar are required. After prior instruction, you will work independently and as part of a team. You will get to know the processes of an internationally operating auction house. The following tasks belong to your activities:

– Supporting the photographer
– Organisation and set-up of the Pre-Sale Viewings
– Data maintenance
– Helping with the auction and the follow-up work

The salary is € 450 per month and the weekly working time is 40 hours.
