Description

Very good, even impression of the popular devotional image. Trimmed on or just outside the platemark.
Immediately before the start of the Reformation with the posting of Luther’s theses in 1517, Dürer once again turned his attention to the image of Virgin until around 1521/22. His aim was to combine the connection to earthly reality achieved in The life of the Virgin with a new emphasis on the sacred. His Virgin with the Starry Crown shows the Mother of God in the traditional figure of the Apocalyptic Woman. – Full-page paper mounted on cardboard. A tear at the right edge. Tiny paper damage to the upper and lower edge. Paper slightly stained, otherwise still good.
