Albrecht Dürer

Virgin and Child seated by the wall

Details

Bartsch 40; Meder 36 I b (from II); Schoch/Mende/Scherbaum 73 I b (from II).

Description

Good, soft impression printed before the revisions to the wall and on the stone step in the front, beneath the lappet of Mary’s robe. The horizontal scratches from the tower to the building complex are still faintly visible. This sheet was created at the same time as Melancholia. Both depictions are characterized by a sense of weary heaviness; the figures sit uncomfortably on hard stone in the open air. Cut on or just outside the plate edge. – With a few isolated foxmarks. The upper left corner professionally reattached, with professionally restored abrasions to the paper in the right edge on the reverse. In good overall condition.
