Wilhelm Busch

So-called Madonna (Young woman with child)

Details

Gmelin 278.

Description

According to Gmelin, this work is a freely conceived, laterally reversed version of the motif of Peter Paul Rubens’ “Madonna in a Wreath of Flowers” (Alte Pinakothek, Munich, inv. no. 331). The oil sketch was probably made in connection with the design of a chalice cloth for Johanna Keßler, done in colours. On the reverse is a handwritten confirmation of authenticity by Otto Nöldeke, Merktshausen am Harz (?), dated 16.3.1908.
