Josef Wopfner

Apparition of an angel on the crossing to the Fraueninsel (Ave Maria)

Details

Not with wood/smoke.

Description

It is getting late. The nuns probably won’t reach the convent in time to say the Hail Mary with the other sisters. The bells ring in the distance, and the prayer is piously said in a standing position in the barge, pausing for a moment. Wopfner repeatedly depicted the evening prayer on the still lake (cf. e.g. Holz/Rauch 108). What distinguishes the present depiction from the other versions of the “Ave Maria” is the divine presence, in the form of the little angels who have come down from heavenly realms. A red-haired angel is now the ferryman and will guide the stragglers safely back to Fraueninsel.
