Description

• Vividly coloured and dynamic work from the artist’s early period
• Sam Francis is one of the main representatives of abstract expressionism
• His works can be found today in the most renowned museums and exhibition venues worldwide, for example the Museum of Modern Art, New York, or the Tate Modern, London
• For Sam Francis, the creative process is the driving force of human existence. His compositions are full of pulsating vibrancy and intense hues, the colours seem to flow into one another, sometimes in splashes or dynamic spray effects. Francis was influenced early on by the representatives of abstract expressionism, with Mark Rothko, Arshile Gorky and Clyfford Still in particular pointing the way for him. Travel provided him with the most important impetus for the development of his own style, as well as learning different techniques and using a wide variety of materials. Sam Francis immersed himself in the world by painting, so the places where he painted are often reflected in the titles of his works. With studios in Bern, Paris, Tokyo, Mexico City and his Californian home, he has created islands of retreat around the world.
