Description
Zwischen 1860 und 1870 hat Andreas Achenbach die Wassermühle als Bildmotiv häufig dargestellt – Höhepunkt dieser Werkgruppe ist die 1866 gemalte “Erftmühle” im Museum Kunstpalast, Düsseldorf (Inv.-Nr. M 4001). Es ist unverkennbar, dass er sich von den niederländischen Mühlenbildern des 17. Jahrhunderts, im Speziellen von den Kompostionen Meindert Hobbemas, inspirieren ließ. Unsere abendliche Stimmung am Mühlbach verzichtet auf jegliche dramatisch zugespitzte Naturdarstellung und scheint noch vom Geist der Romantik berührt. Während Achenbach mit seinen Marinen in schäumender See zum “Herrscher über Land und Meer” wurde, wie ihn 1861 ein Rezensent bezeichnete, wirkt diese heimische Landschaft intimer und ruhiger. Am verglühenden Himmel prangt der gelb ausstrahlende Vollmond, der sich im silbrigen Wasser des Bachlaufs mehrmals spiegelt.
