Verso auf dem Keilrahmen und auf der Leinwand handschriftlich bezeichnet “No 13 Made in France”. Auf Anregung des New Yorker Sammlers und Kunsthändlers Erich Cohn fährt Kleinschmidt im Mai und Juni 1939 einige Male von La Varenne nach Chartres. Am 13. Juni 1939 schreibt er an Cohn: “Mein Lieber, ich bin froh, dass ich in Chartres war, der Eindruck war überwältigend.” In einem Brief vom 1. Oktober 1939 an Cohn nennt Kleinschmidt zwei Landschaften von Chartres, die beide nach Amerika geschickt werden sollten.
