Description
Verso auf dem Keilrahmen handschriftlich bezeichnet “Made in France”. Paul Kleinschmidt malt “Die Chaussee” im Frühjahr 1939 nach Skizzen aus La Varenne in Südfrankreich, wohin er im Vorjahr gereist war. Dort entsteht auch ein großformatiges Aquarell gleichen Motivs (Lipps-Kant A189) sowie eine Federzeichnung (Lipps-Kant 95). Letztere, mit dem Titel “Platanen in Südfrankreich”, widmet und schenkt der Künstler Helene Cohn, der Gattin seines amerikanischen Galeristen Erich Cohn in New York. Das Gemälde wird direkt von Cohn angekauft, ebenso wie viele weitere Frankreich-Motive. Auf Anregung Cohns war Kleinschmidt in den Jahren 1936-39 mehrfach nach Frankreich gereist.
