The raising of Lazarus: The small plate

Details

Bartsch 72; White/Boon 72 I (von II); Hinterding/Rutgers (The New Hollstein) 206 I (von II).

Provenienz:
Siegfried Barden (1854-1917), Hamburg, verso mit dem Stempel (Lugt 218 u. 2756).

Description

Splendid, effective and clear early impression before the fine shading on the forehead of Lazarus, which becomes stronger in the 2nd state. The light shading on the cloth and the shoulder of the woman standing to the left of Christ is clearly visible. Trimmed with faintly visible plate tone and a fine margin around the edge of the plate. The depiction placed in a rock-cut tomb was created in 1642, the year of the death of Rembrandt’s wife Saskia – Tiny brown stains in places, remnants of old mounting on verso, otherwise a very fine copy.
