William Sharp, (Mitte des 19. Jh.), Manchester, verso mit dem Stempel (Lugt 2650).
Description
Excellent, strong impression, with a burr effect in the shadows. The vertical glitter through the hand and the horizontal glitter above Saskia’s chest still visible and the two diagonals in the upper right still clearly marked. With a narrow margin around the platemark on three sides, trimmed to this on the right. The double portrait shows Rembrandt in front of a work table in everyday dress. It is the only Engraving that shows the artist with his wife Saskia. The depiction was probably made in front of a mirror, which is why Rembrandt appears here as a left-handed draughtsman. – A small brown stain lower left, otherwise in very good condition.
