Description

After an interruption of many years, during which Trübner spent the warm summer months at Lake Starnberg, he did not visit the Odenwald again until 1913. There he created a series of views of the old Benedictine monastery of Neuburg Abbey near Heidelberg, a popular meeting place for bourgeois salons and writers at the time.
In variations of this motif, the part of the southern wing of the building with its yellow façade can also be seen on the left, with three flower pots on the ground in front of it (cf. Rohrandt G 800), but here, due to the closer view, only the ivy-covered south-west corner. The wall on the left and the hedge of foliage on the right provide an almost window-like view across a flowerbed to the tranquil village of Schlierbach. Joseph August Beringer pointed out the relevance of this series for Trübner’s oeuvre: “In the Stift-Neuburg works (…) Trübner moves on to the final phase of his landscape art. A wealth of colour, the simplest lines and the strongest spatial effects are achieved through the interweaving of green tones against the blue and yellowish background. It is fair to call them paintings that have brought a new artistic character to the romantic anticipation of places: pure nature, free of all sublimations” (Beringer, 1917).
