Description

The present work “Yellow Tulips” from 2014 shows Alex Katz’s deep connection to floral motifs, a theme that he has worked intensively on since the 1960s, especially during his summer stays in Maine. This print “Yellow Tulips” references the 2013 oil painting “Tulips 4”, which is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. With this series of flower paintings, Alex Katz combined his early passion for large-format landscapes with portraiture. Through the medium of exaggerated enlargement, the aesthetics of the floral motifs are rendered in a highly stylised manner and seem to float freely in space. The macrophotographic approach is reminiscent of classic nature photography, while the monochrome backgrounds and vibrant color combinations obscure reality for the viewer. In addition to flower paintings, Katz also created numerous series of prints, all of which are represented in well-known collections worldwide.
