Description

Before Herman de Vries began working as a freelance artist, he first trained as a landscape gardener and worked in fields, forests and gardens for several years as a young man. He combines his observations of nature and the biological phenomena that prevail there with philosophical questions. With these considerations, de Vries contributed to the discourse on art after 1945 and continues to make a unique and universally recognised contribution today. Herman de Vries was a founding member of the Dutch group nul, which was close to ZERO and also proclaimed a new beginning for the visual arts. In 1984, de Vries was represented in the exhibition “Von hier aus – Zwei Monate neue deutsche Kunst in Düsseldorf” curated by Kaspar König. Today, this project is considered one of the most important defining events of its time. In 2015, Herman de Vries was entrusted with the Dutch pavilion at the Venice Biennale.
