Description

With the midday sun high and the sky almost cloudless, Sunday walkers stroll along a dirt road that winds through a meadowy landscape down towards the shore of Lake Starnberg. Starnberg Castle can be seen in the middle distance on the right and the Zugspitze massif appears beyond the lake, blurring in a hazy blue. The distant view of the mountain ranges stretching one after the other is given an atmospheric counterbalance by the groups of trees that extend from the left into the center of the picture, casting shadows. The motif, which is reminiscent of Eduard Schleich the Elder, is a fusion of late Biedermeier veduta and atmospheric paysage intime. Stäbli painted an almost identical replica of this motif, which was widely distributed as a print by Hanfstaengl (cf. Katalog der Firma Franz Hanfstaengl, Hanfstaengl-Drucke nach Bildwerken alter und neuer Kunst, Munich 1973, illustration of the colour collotype print no. 13640).
