Description

A work by Jacob van Ruisdael housed in the Bavarian State Painting Collections (inv. no. 874) served as the model for this landscape, which is well documented in academic literature and has been exhibited several times. As explained in detail in the Munich 1991 exhibition catalogue, Dillis probably painted the copy “in the 1820s, when the old attribution (to Allaert van Everdingen) was still valid” (see Dillis’ note on the frame). Listed by Dillis in 1825 under the name Everdingen in the Royal Gallery’s directory, the landscape was re-attributed to the painter Jacob van Ruisdael in his Pinakothek directory drawn up in 1838 (Pinacothek directory no. 475). “Ruisdael’s painting and Dillis’ copy offer the possibility of an instructive comparison between Dutch painting of the 17th century and landscape art of the 19th century, particularly with regard to colour. Dillis explicitly referred to the exemplary nature of this tradition and referenced it in his work.” (Barbara Hardtwig, Johann Georg von Dillis. Landschaft und Menschenbild, Munich/Dresden 1991, p. 308).
