Black pen drawing after Martin Schongauer on laid paper. (1st third 16th C.). 20.7 x 15.6 cm. Inscribed on the reverse in old, contemporary script “mertin schön” and with a small sketch of a rose by a later hand (around 1800). With an unidentified collector’s stamp on the reverse “Gothic letter P in an oval” (not listed in Lugt).

Description

Die Zeichnung folgt einem Kupferstich Martin Schongauers (Bartsch 69, Lehrs 34), der in seine Frühzeit datiert wird. Das Thema des betrauernden Schmerzensmanns ist ein im Mittelalter entstandener Andachtsbildtypus, der in der Volksfrömmigkeit des 15. Jahrhunderts besondere Verbreitung erlangte. Dies dürfte einst auch die Funktion unserer Zeichnung gewesen sein. – Vereinzelt schwache braune Fleckchen, die Ecken leicht bestoßen. Insgesamt in guter Erhaltung.
