Dem Frankfurter Kunstsammler und Kunstschriftsteller Heinrich Sebastian Hüsgen zufolge malte Johann Daniel Bager “gute, sehr fleißige Früchtestücke, die öfters so schön wie de Heem ausgefallen sind”. Der Künstler ist auch unter dem Namen “Goethemaler” bekannt, denn er war, wie Goethe in seiner Autobiographie “Aus meinem Leben. Dichtung und Wahrheit” berichtet, für dessen Vater Johann Caspar Goethe tätig.
