Description
Schon mit fünfzehn Jahren Schüler Girodet-Triosons an der Pariser Ecole des Beaux-Arts, schloss sich der Künstler später dem Kreis um Géricault und Delacroix an. Zeit seines Lebens stellte er seine Marinemalerei im Salon, gelegentlich aber auch an der Londoner Royal Academy aus; 1837 wurde er zum Mitglied der Berliner Akademie ernannt. Er war nicht nur im Auftrag Louis-Philippes und Napoleons III., sondern auch für Nikolaus I. in Warschau und St. Petersburg tätig. Die vorliegende, in warmer Farbigkeit und mit fedrigen kleinen Pinselstrichen komponierte Arbeit gehört zu den intimeren Arbeiten, in denen seine malerische Sensibilität besonders gut zum Ausdruck kommt. – Mit kleinen Retuschen und leichter Craquelébildung.
