Watercolour over pen and greyish black ink on wove paper. 1809. C. 20.5 . 27 cm. Barely legibly signed and dated lower right. Framed.
Highlighted by an unidentified light source, the cows are transformed into isolated shapes, clearly set off against the dark background. Frozen in a timeless wait, they seem in perfect harmony with their surroundings. Some 14 preparatory drawings for this watercolour are known.
Description
Anhand der gekonnten Ausleuchtung der Tiere und des Hirtenjungen durch eine nicht näher bestimmte Lichtquelle erzielt Kobell ein Gefühl der Isolierung der Formen. Klar heben sich die Rinder gegen den dunklen Hintergrund ab. Sie scheinen zeit- und regungslos zu verharren, in vollkommener Harmonie mit ihrer Umgebung: “In dem schönen Aquarell (…) ist die Identität von Form und Inhalt im naturalistischen Bereich zur Einheit gebracht worden” (Wichmann, Wilhelm von Kobell, 1996, nicht veröffentlicht). Für dieses Aquarell allein sind 14 Vorzeichnungen nachweisbar. Mit Einfassungslinie in Schwarz. Im Passepartoutausschnitt leicht gebräunt. Etwas wellig. Verso umlaufend mit Resten alter Montage. Von guter und schöner Erhaltung.
