Madonna and child. Oil on canvas. C. 95 : 79 cm. Signed lower right. Framed. Intimate rendering of this religious subject, with the child and mother in close embrace. While the painting’s structure, a triangel representing the Holy Trinity, remains rigid, Max manages to show the psychological depth of the mother-child relationship.
Description
In Max’ Werk finden sich solche gründerzeitlichen Thematiken wie Genre und Historie, aber auch Religion und Glaube, der hier auf eine sehr persönliche, intime Art vermittelt wird. Das Kind schmiegt sich eng an die Mutter, deren Kopf die Spitze eines Dreiecks bildet, Symbol der Dreifaltigkeit. Max gelingt hier eine einfühlsame Mutter-Kind-Studie mit psychologischer Tiefe. Durchgehend mit Craquelébildung, daher auch mit Retuschen, so auch auf dem Arm des Kindes. Von farbfrischer Erhaltung.
