Excellent, strong, fine-lined impression with the closed tree trunk, which characterises the 4th Impression. The bridge in the background has not yet been rebuilt, as indicated in the 5th state, but the fine diagonal lines on the cow fleeing to the right are already recognisable. Von Seidlitz describes this print as “Rembrandt’s masterpiece from the mid-1930s. Here, for the first time, he deliberately uses semi-darkness in such a way that he builds the composition on the contrast between light and dark”. The Engraving was created in 1634, the year of his marriage to Saskia van Uylenburgh. With a fine margin around the borderlines. – Occasional tiny brown stains, verso with a brown stain. The edges re-fibred due to small tears and rubbing, otherwise in good condition.
