In the late 1960s, Giorgio Griffa made a name for himself as a radical explorer of the basic elements of painting at Gian Enzo Sperone’s gallery in Turin. “Orizzontale” from 1972 is exemplary of his unusual working process: the canvas is laid on the floor without a stretcher and slowly absorbs the marks and stripes of acrylic paint. This emphasises the inherent logic of the painterly act. The pictures created in this way thus become fragments of realisation of the independent physical and temporal emergence of a painting.
