Achim Moeller, director of the Lyonel Feininger Project LLC, New York – Berlin, has confirmed the authenticity of this work, which is registered in the archive of the Lyonel Feininger Project under the number 1875-09-22-23. With a photo expertise dated 22.9.2023. Exhibitions: Mit Stift und Pinsel XI: Aquarelle und Zeichnungen, Galerie Elfriede Wirnitzer, Baden-Baden 1989, cat. no.8, with ill. Provenance: Galerie Elfriede Wirnitzer, Baden-Baden; private collection, Munich, acquired from the aforementioned in 1989.
Descrizione
Lyonel Feininger spent the summer months from 1908 to 1921 on the Baltic Sea in Usedom. He explored the island on numerous tours by bike and drew his so-called “nature notes” on site. This also includes this drawing from July 1912, which shows squat houses in the small village of Alt-Sallenthin on Usedom. Feininger then used the motif for the painting “Dorf Alt-Sallenthin” (Hess 89) the following year for the painting “Dorfstraße, Alt-Sallenthin” (Hess 97), which is now housed in the Folkwang Museum in Essen.
