Magnificent, strong and clear trial proof from the historical depictions for the “Triumphal Arch of Emperor Maximilian I”. Dürer worked on the Triumphal Arch as a leading artist, but not all of the woodcuts were made by him. Of the 24 historical depictions, four woodcuts by the master have been identified, including this one. It depicts the meeting of Maximilian I (1459-1519; German Emperor 1493-1519) with the English King Henry VIII (1491-1547) on the battlefield of Guinegate in the camp near Thérouanne in northern France on August 16, 1513. Cut up to the margin line. – With remnants of an earlier mount on the reverse and slightly stained, otherwise very well preserved. Very rare!
