Descrizione
In his pictorial stories, Wilhelm Busch depicted people and their actions in an exaggerated and caricature-like manner. Less well known are the sensitive portraits he created as a painter, in which the interest is clearly on the models and their immediate surroundings. In front of a dark brown background, without any suggestion of three-dimensionality, a small boy is sitting on a stone. His hands are in his lap, presumably he has difficulty holding still and he is fidgeting with his fingers. He has pulled his legs up a little, no wonder, for he is barefoot and the ground is probably cold. His face reflects an expression of absent-minded, daydreaming abstraction.
