Details

Probably Berckenhagen 463.

Descrizione

Goeckingk was above all known as a Rococo lyricist. He studied jurisprudence and cameralistics in Halle and was a legal trainee at the Halberstadt War and Domain Chamber from 1768-1770, where he joined the literary circle around Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim. Goeckingk wrote to him from Karlsbad on May 30th 1785: “(…) Graff painted me Dresden. Viewed as a painting, I like it very much, but it seemed to me as if it depicted a completely different person, but it is supposed to be similar. He styled my hair completely differently than how I usually wear my hair. As soon as the secondary things are completed and completely dry, it will go to Leipzig to H. Gottlob, who will copy it.” The copy mentioned hangs today in the Gleimhaus, Museum of the German Enlightenment, in Halberstadt (inv. no. A 099 ). In addition, Graff’s painting was engraved by Eduard Henne as a frontispiece for the 55th volume of the “General German Library”. With a work report by the restorer Dr. Rudolf Wackernagel, Munich, April 28, 1988.
