Günther Förg

The renowned German visual artist Günther Förg was born in 1952 in Füssen and died in 2013 in Freiburg im Breisgau. Förg was an abstractionist, within the vast body of work examining the legacy of pre- and post-war tendencies, from Modernism, through Informel painting, to Minimalism and Abstract Expressionism. Following his education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich (1973-6), Förg represented a radical and maximally reduced language of abstract art. With the beginning of 1980s, the artist started incorporating other materials into his paintings, subsequently aluminum and lead, later also tinkering with the medium of photography and the aesthetics of Bauhaus. Through the years, his works has been extensively collected and exhibited over 700 times, just to name the most important of them, such as the Documenta in Kassel (1992), “On the Edge” at the MoMA in New York (1997), and “Modern Life Painters” at the Centre Pompidou (2006). In 2015, Deichtorhallen in Hamburg is showing his works. His body of work is also included in collections of the MoMA in New York, MOCA in Los Angeles, Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Tate Britain and Tate Modern in London, among many others. His latest show was at the gallery Thomas in 2022, which presented work from over three decades of his creative making.
