Description

The present subject appears to have been inspired by Gerard Dou and other Leiden artists such as Quiringh van Brekelenkam, Jacob van Spreeuwen and Jan Adriaensz. van Staveren. It shows a hermit or saint reading, surrounded by characteristic attributes such as a lantern, crucifix, rosary, skull, inkwell, bottle, etc. The arched wooden frame through which we view the hermit is another reference to Dou – whose arched stone windows had already become a somewhat of a trademark during his lifetime.
