Description

– Watercolour plays a central role in the artist’s work

– Large format sheet

– Bright colours

Watercolour plays a central role in Schmidt-Rottluff’s work. It was in this medium that he developed his decisive contribution to the “Brücke style” in 1909, and its fluidity and lightness also became a model for the group’s work in oil. The present colourful still life is a particularly powerful and decorative example of his work in this technique in his later years. Quickly applied black lines and delicate structures are laid on the paper with a broad brush, giving the composition its ornamental structure. Schmidt-Rottluff then enlivens this with a luminous and expressive colourfulness.

A particularly fine example of his late work.

Inscribed with various numbers on the reverse.
