Frantisek Kupka

L’Entêtement (ou L’Idole noire)

Description

Very rare, early print by František Kupka from the four-part cycle “La Voix du silence”. The common theme is the search for the meaning of life, influenced by theosophical literature. Several oil paintings can be linked thematically to this cycle. “Due to its complexity and expressive power, Kupka’s graphic cycle can be categorised as one of the major works of European Symbolism.” (Márketa Theinhardt, in: exhib. cat. František Kupka. A Retrospective, Centre Pompidou, Paris 2003, p. 46). L’Entêtement (ou L’Idole noire) shows a seemingly tiny human being who, on his journey through life, “encounters immeasurable difficulties – powerful idols, unsolvable riddles, the feeling of nothingness – but he ‘revolts’ against these forces and finally finds his salvation.” (op. cit.).
