La Vierge et l’enfant Jésus debout sur son berceau

Details

Walch 7 II (von IV); Griffiths/Hartley 6.

Provenienz:
Sammlung Heinrich Brockhaus (1804-1874), Leipzig, seitdem in Familienbesitz.

Description

Quite excellent, richly contrasting early impression of the rare II. State, before the later added publisher’s address by Le Blond lower right. The expressive, dense composition characteristically illustrates the artist’s etching style, which is characterised by a Parmigianinesque, manneristically exaggerated conception of figures, paired with a high degree of lightness. Jacques Bellange’s oeuvre comprises only around 47 prints. With a narrow margin around the borderlines, with the visible platemark at the bottom. – Mounted to the backing card on the verso at the left edge. An approx. 1.5 cm tear to the upper left edge. A former horizontal crease on the verso, not perceptible on the recto. A small ink stain in the sleeve, otherwise in good condition.
Of great rarity, Walch was only able to find four copies in public ownership.
