Description

Brilliant, tonal and clear impression with an invigorating plate tone. Giovanni Battista Fontana was influenced by Titian, Veronese and Giulio Romano in his early years in Verona. From 1562, Fontana worked in Vienna and then in Innsbruck, where he was appointed court painter to Archduke Ferdinand of Austria in 1575. Bartsch knows of around 68 works by the artist. With a margin up to 6 mm wide around the platemark. – Verso with traces and remnants of former mounting, slightly thinned in the lower right corner on the reverse, otherwise in good condition. Of great rarity!
