Stock (c. 1580-after 1648, 1 vol.); Robert van Voerst (1597-c. 1635, 3 vols.); Lucas Vorsterman the Elder (1595-1675, 21 vols.). Van Dyck planned this publication after his return from Italy (1626) and before his journey to England (1632). The artist made careful preparatory drawings with chalk and brush, and supervised and checked the work of the engravers, the best of the Rubens circle. One of the most outstanding sheets in the rendering of human physiognomy is the portrait of Pieter Brueghel the Younger. The Engraving is perfect in its sketchy form. The first edition was published in Antwerp in 1635-1636. However, it was not complete and the title page only appeared in the 1645 edition by Gillis Hendricx, engraved by Jacob Neels – Paper darkened and somewhat time stained. Handling creases and occasional small marginal tears along the edges. One diagonal, backed tear. A total of 13 loose cut sheets, with uneven cut edges. The leather binding somewhat stained and partially damaged at the joint of the spine, otherwise in good condition.
