Description

Trübner’s enduring interest in landscape painting had been awakened early on by his fellow painter Carl Schuch. From the 1890s onwards, this – according to the artist “the most important field for the pure artistic direction of modern times” (Kunstverständnis von heute, 1892) – took up a large part of his artistic output. The present landscape in portrait format is a detail of a panorama-like version (cf. Rohrandt G 661). It shows a meadow landscape, bordered by a wooded mountain ridge and crossed by a river – the impasto leaves have already taken on the warm tones of autumn. Trübner had left Munich in 1896 to take over the management of the master studio for painting at the Städtisches Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt. In the following years, he painted pictures of the neighbouring Odenwald, and in 1902 of the Mümling and Marbach valleys. What these views have in common is the unobstructed view of nature that breathes deep tranquillity. The dense texture of the brushstrokes makes them appear almost abstract in parts.
