Description

View across a mountain ridge, crossed by a stream in the valley, out to a bay. On the right, as staffage, two soldiers who have settled down to rest. They are looking towards a castle on a hill. In addition to the fascination of Spanish views, e.g. of Granada and the Sierra Nevada, the seashore exerted a great attraction on Fritz Bamberger. The area depicted here can be located in the south of France, near Nice. It is presumably a counterpart to the tondo that was auctioned at Karl & Faber on 10 May 2019 for € 11,250 (auction 288, lot 97). Another landscape in tondo format is in the Städel, Frankfurt a.M., and is dated 1862. In terms of style, all three paintings were probably created in quick succession.
