Description

Sigmar Polke is one of the most prominent German artists of the present day. Throughout his life he questioned and expanded common ideas about art. He did not develop a characteristic style, but instead moves between the worlds of figuration and abstraction; his works are often the result of open-ended experiments. Polke was born in 1941 and experienced the booming of capitalism and the increasing commercialisation of all areas of life in the early years of the Federal Republic of Germany. It was in this social environment that he developed his ideas for a repositioning of art.
