Albrecht Altdorfer

St. George killing the Dragon

Details

Bartsch 55; Winzinger 14 c (from c); The New Hollstein w.58.

Description

Very fine, deep black impression of this rare sheet. With the gap in the upper right of the margin and the additional 10 mm hole in the uppermost part of the cloud, as mentioned for the third version by Winzinger. Altdorfer approached this motif again in around 1515 in a slightly smaller copperplate (see w.e.22). Trimmed along the margin. Some minor small foxmarks and with remnants of earlier mounting. A c. 2 mm long, inconspicuous tear on the lower half of the right edge, otherwise in good condition. Rare!
