Description

Cattle were still kept on Fraueninsel until the early 1950s. However, there was not enough space to grow large quantities of hay for feeding, so it had to be transported in stages by boat from the meadows on the mainland. Wopfner captured the sight of these “racers”, often loaded metres high and lying deep in the water, in numerous studies. Here he documents the piling of a mountain of hay onto such a boat. On the lake the Fraueninsel, behind it the hazy backdrop of the Alpine foothills. We would like to thank Irmgard Holz, Munich, for her kind support in cataloguing this work.
