Description
Obwohl nur wenig über sein Leben bekannt ist, ist Christoffel van den Berghe mit seinem frühesten datierten Gemälde 1617 greifbar. Vermutlich um 1590 in den nördlichen Niederlanden geboren, musste er diese aufgrund seines Glaubens verlassen und wurde in Middelburg im Südwesten ansässig. Dort wird er 1619 als Vorstandsmitglied der örtlichen St. Lukasgilde angeführt. Er malte neben Blumenstillleben in der Art Ambrosius Bosschaerts, der in manchen Quellen als sein Lehrer genannt wird, auch kleine Fluss- und Dorflandschaften, die jene Jan Brueghels d. Ä. rekurrieren und ausnahmslos auf Kupfer gemalt sind. So trägt auch diese kleinteilige Dorfszene seine Handschrift. Typisch ist die tüpfelnde Manier des Farbauftrags sowie die detailverliebte, lupenhaft klein gemalte Staffage.
