Watercolour, the plumage highlighted in white, over traces of pencil on laid paper. (1787/91). 28.4 x 20.6 cm. With a black ink margin. Inscribed in handwriting on a cartouche on the reverse “Le Coucou. de grandeur Naturelle; en allemand Kukuk.” and inscribed with the dimensions “Longueur totale à pied 8 lignes. Vol. à pied 9 pouces. 3 lignes.”.In an old collector’s mount, thereon inscribed in a cartouche.

Description

Mannlich schuf für seinen Sohn Carl die mehrere Folio-Bände umfassende “Sammlung Europäischer Vögel”, eine Reihe ornithologisch exakter Vogeldarstellungen. Diese war angeregt durch die ausgemalten Tafeln der “Histoire naturelle, générale et particulière” (1749) des Grafen Buffon und dokumentierte mit künstlerischer Sachlichkeit die heimische Vogelwelt. In alter Sammlermontage, dort auf Kartusche bezeichnet. – In sehr guter Erhaltung.
