Die Graphik entstand unter dem Einfluss Beckmanns Militärzeit während des Ersten Weltkriegs in Belgien, wo er Brüssel, Gent, Lille und Ostende besuchte und als Assistent bei den Sanitätern eingesetzt wurde.
