Description
Schon mit fünfzehn Jahren Schüler Girodet-Triosons an der Pariser Ecole des Beaux-Arts, schloss sich der Künstler später dem Kreis um Géricault und Delacroix an. Zeit seines Lebens stellte er seine Marinemalerei im Salon, gelegentlich aber auch an der Londoner Royal Academy aus; 1837 wurde er zum Mitglied der Berliner Akademie ernannt. Er war nicht nur im Auftrag Louis-Philippes und Napoleons III., sondern auch für Nikolaus I. in Warschau und St. Petersburg tätig.
