Adolf Lier reiste 1861 und 1864 nach Paris und lernte dort die Malerei der Schule von Barbizon kennen. Das Erfassen der besonderen Licht- und Wettersituation, des Wechsels vom Gewitter zum Aufklaren des Himmels ist ein zentrales Thema in seiner Malerei.
