Description
Das Licht der untergehenden Sonne und der Eindruck der friedvollen Landschaft täuscht: Das enge Tal ist für die ahnunglos daherpreschenden Reiter zu einer tödlichen Gefahr geworden. Ein kurzes Gefecht entbrennt, Schüsse krachen, Pulverrauch steigt auf, scheuende Pferde haben ihre Reiter abgeworfen, im Hintergrund verfolgt ein Musketier einen fliehenden Reiter.
Das Sujet des Überfalls hat in der holländischen Malerei eine lange Tradition und wurde von Malern wie Esaias van de Velde und später Wouwerman oft dargestellt.
