Der Mainzer Johann Jakob Hoch wurde künstlerisch zunächst in Wien, danach in Paris sozialisiert, doch blieb für ihn die holländische Kunst des 17. Jahrhunderts vorbildlich. Er war bekannt für seine fein, ja raffiniert ausgeführten Gouachen, die in ihrer Stilisierung den Einfluss der Leidener Feinmalerei verraten. Diese Begabung zur feinsten Wiedergabe der Stofflichkeiten zeigt Hoch auch in unserem kurz vor seinem Tod entstandenen, aus der Zeit gefallenen Stillleben mit Vogelnest und Eidechse.
