“Das schönste Stück ist aber die Familie des Julius Sabinus vom Professor Rehberg in Rom, in Öl (Lebensgröße). Julius Sabinus hat sich vor den Verfolgungen Vespasians in eine Höhle geflüchtet. Vom Schmerz überwältigt liegt er auf der Erde und stützt den Kopf auf beide Hände – sein Sohn steht vor ihm und bittet weinend um Nahrung – die Frau, welche auch auf der Erde sitzt, reicht ihm mit tränendem Auge eine Brodkruste, indem sie das andere jüngere Kind an der Brust nährt. – Das Stück hat einen bewundrungswürdigen großen schönen Styl, und ist ganz in italiänischer Haltung vertrefflich gemalt.”
E. T. A. Hoffmann am 15. Oktober 1798 an seinen Jugendfreund Theodor Gottlieb Hippel anlässlich der Akademieausstellung in Berlin, wo eine heute verschollene Fassung des Gemäldes gezeigt wurde.
