Das Bild einer Rast von dem alten Mann und dem jungen Mädchen auf dem Berge nach einem langen Anstieg ist mehr als ein liebliches Landschaftsaquarell – es ist aufgeladen mit religiöser Symbolik: Ganz links formen sich Stöcke wie zufällig zur Kreuzesform, während rechts daneben noch die genagelten Füße des Schmerzensmannes am Kreuz erkennbar sind. Davon unberührt ist das schlafende Mädchen; der Alte dagegen hat sich vom Kreuz abgewendet und sitzt sinnend in sich zusammengesunken – im Blick sein unausweichliches Schicksal, dem er für den Moment Zeit abgerungen hat. –
