Description
Der Titel stammt aus dem 1994 veröffentlichten Werkverzeichnis, in dem eine ganze Reihe von Gemälden mit diesem Thema aufgeführt werden. Sotheby’s hingegen identifizierte die Porträtierte 2012 als Mme Germaine, womit sicherlich Germaine Carco, die Frau des Schriftstellers und Kunstkritikers Francis Carco, gemeint ist. Derain war mit dem Ehepaar, das wie er im Quartier Latin in Paris wohnte, befreundet. Der Künstler porträtierte immer wieder Frau Carco. In dem vorliegenden Gemälde zeigen die nicht definierten Flächen reiner Farbe den Einfluss Cezannes in seinem späteren Œuvre.
